The social organization of visitor’s interaction in a museum
with  Dóra Bereti
Sociological research reveals a long-standing interest in museums and galleries. Lately, new directions focus on social interaction within the museum space, as people’s action and experience is always produced in the presence of, and in concert with others (Heath 2001, vom Lehn 2008). In my presentation we are going to look at how a computer-based exhibit feature in the social interaction of visitors, while participants orient to and make sense of the exhibition. Drawing on ethnometodology and conversation analysis, we will be looking at some data excerpts driven by the following questions:
- how visitors make sense of the exhibit material (micro)?
- what activities do they take meanwhile (mezo)?
- are these activities self-initiated or socially co-constructed (macro)?
